All events held at Musicmakers.

11:00-12:30 • WORKSHOP 1
Keeping it Interesting (Stephanie Claussen)

You discover a delightful melody, find the music, and learn the notes. What comes next? This workshop will explore how to add variety to any melody. Topics will include Celtic ornaments (what they are, where to add them in the music and how to master them), unique "textures," passing tones, and easy chord substitutions.

Some knowledge of chords helpful, but not necessary

12:30-1:30 • Lunch (provided)

1:30-3:00 • WORKSHOP 2
Beauty Tunes (Kim Robertson)

What qualities make a melody beautiful? Why are we drawn to certain tunes more than others and somehow never tire of playing them? Using a sampling of airs in various modes and styles, learn some of the essential ingredients of a "beauty tune" and what to look for when choosing (or composing!) your own pieces. Working from lead sheets, suggestions will also be made for simple but effective left hand accompaniment and tips on dynamics and phrasing to play the melody more musically.

Experienced beginner to Adv, ability to read helpful but all levels welcome.

3:30-4:00 • High Tea

4:00-5:00 • Concert

About the Artists

Kim Robertson is a renowned performer, arranger, and recording artist who has stretched the boundaries of the harp for a new generation of performers and audiences. As a pioneer in the American folk harp movement, she combines an improvisational spirit with a passionate sense of tradition, bringing a contemporary touch to a centuries-old instrument. Kim combines inventiveness and virtuosity with a keen sense of melody and respect for tradition.

Stephanie Claussen began learning harp at the age of seven when her father built her first harp from a Musicmakers harp kit. At the age of twelve, she won first place in the Macalester Scottish Country Harp Competition in St. Paul and was additionally named "Most Promising Harpist." After studying harp for eleven years with Twin Cities professional harpist Cathy Victorsen, Claussen realized that, for her, making music needed to be more than just a hobby. She obtained her Bachelors of Music in performance at the University of Minnesota under the instruction of Kathy Kienzle, principal harpist of the Minnesota Orchestra. Mel Bay Publications, Inc. recently published her book of harp arrangements, "Light so Brilliant: Christmas Carols and tunes for solo harp."
