It is generally easier to build a large fretted
instrument than a small one because the tolerances are
not so tight on the fretboard. For that reason, we
recommend that a beginner woodworker start with a kit
like this before tackling the regular small mandolin .
This project consists of gluing the two pre-bent sides
together at the tail end and into slots in the base of
the neck to form the basic frame, then preparing the
soundboard and back with inner bracing. Use clamps,
weights, and/or tape to glue the back and front securely
to the frame, and then trim them flush with the sides.
The fretboard is pre-slotted for accurate fret placement.
The kit instructions will also show how and when to add
optional inlay banding around the edges if you have a
router. We recommend our Musicmaker’s Instrument
Finish for a beautiful protective coating.
