Mountain Banjo, steel strings
I learned this tune from Sam Timmreck, a local coffee delivery guy, old-time musician, and clogger extraordinaire. He learned it from Lee Guthrie, a local bow-maker. Lee couldn’t remember where he learned it and he also couldn’t remember the name. (It is possible that he has just inhaled too much rosin…). So we called it Sam’s Gag Reel for about a year. Then Bigfoot released a CD and this song was on it under the name Speed the Plough. So there you have it.
We usually play this one in A but I had the banjo tuned in D and this tune happens to play really well in Double D tuning.
