Replacing a broken string

So far I am happy with the strings. I have only replaced one, the highest E. Since I am left handed I was nervous about using the diagrams about the knots. I dropped a dowel rod into the harp because my first knot was loose. I shook it out and started over. That was yesterday. On the second try it seems to be perfect and looks the same as the original knots on the other strings. I much prefer using dowel rods to pieces of string to hold the knots.

This is a really sweet sounding harp. I built mine from the kit, which was very enjoyable. The quality of the parts are first class. I did change one thing...I used bookmatched poplar for the soundboard and put the spruce on the back in effect creating two soundboards. This makes the sound really full and sweet. I used a shellack finish with a carnival wax over the shellac. The harp has a very natural shine and feel. I’m really happy with the way this kit turned out.

I would like to thank you for the plans and hardware for the hammered dulcimer I bought recently. I chickened out of building my own bridges, but otherwise built it myself and had a lot of fun doing so, and am pleased with the result. An excellent set of plans and instructions made it a pleasure to build. I’ve ordered the hardware to build the mini for my granddaughter, as well as the stand plans.

This is a good book for de-mystifying musical modes. The author also explains how chords reinforce the sound and flavor of its' mode. I'm so sad these are discontinued, but stoked that an email got them to put together and list two final "clearance" kits. i wanted something my 6 year old could play whenever he wants without supervision and this fit the bill. i did have to do most of the work:) not sure what the earlier reviewer was so upset about the toothpick frets for. the wood glue we used actually makes them super sturdy. i strung it and tuned it like a ukelele because he already knew some uke chords and everything is great on it. he decorated it with markers all in his own design.

My grandfather who, was from Voss, Norway, made a Salmodikon in 1894 before he immigrated to USA. His Salmodikon stayed with the family until a year ago when it was given to me. I am a music teacher and have been living in Norway for 41 years. I had never seen this instrument before. A month ago another music teacher was visiting who knew it was a Salmodikon! I could not find anything in the library about it and was over joyed to find informastion from MusicMakers online. I now have the Music for Psalmodikon book. The history and how to play the salmodikon and read sifferskrift is great. And that you can have 4 psalmodikon instruments to make a quartet is fantastic! With a quartet you could paly the whole hymne book. What FUN Thank You!

I love the sturdiness and simplicity of my Harp Wheels. They are so much easier to use and space-saving than having to lug around a heavy non-collapsible dolly or cart. I also feel safer and more in control when moving and making turns, because I’m actually holding onto my harp or its case, and not a cart handle. I also appreciate the braking system, which ensures my harp moves only when I want it to, and as the video shows, even play while the wheels are on. Mr. Brown and his measuring instructions were very helpful. I am very pleased with this purchase and Musicmakers’ customer service.

I wanted a practice harp that could go anywhere with me; this Lyre fit the bill. The kit instructions were fabulous. I emailed my questions and got a quick response when I had any questions. Where I did not have enough clamps, I used my exercise weights. You can build this Lyre with minimum equipment. It took me a month of nights and weekends. I did a lot of pyrographic design on it to make it really pretty. The sound is wonderful. I made a backpack for it, and it goes everywhere at only 4 pounds. Whenever I start to play it, people want to hear more!

I have made 3 of these from plans. I gave two away. This instrument is as good or better than any you can buy. Careful selection of the tone woods for the back and sound board can alter the instrument to favor the upper or lower range. It is so sensitive it will play itself from vibrations in the room. Mine does and both of the ones I made for gifts have reported the same.

I am reading your folk harp design and construction book these days, with great interest, I like the practical approach and the balance between theory and practical tips. I have already built an "almost Limerick" from your blueprint, I call it "almost Limerick" as I chose a different shape for the neck and pillar, but the geometry is all yours. The harp turned to be a good one, different skilled harpists have already tried it and each time it is appreciated for the sound, especially at the bass end, which is quite a surprise for such a small harp So, congratulations for your design, it has to be a really good one if it led to a successful instrument at my first try at building one, and in spite of some errors I made (I had not bought your book yet).

I'm writing to commend you for your excellent manual "Folk Harp Design and Construction". Without it I would not have even thought of venturing out on making musical instruments from scratch. But thanks to your extensive experience, you put together a manual that started me on a wonderful new venture in my musical journey. My background is a pianist first, and I am both a piano teacher, and piano tuner/technician. My own piano is a Steinway concert grand that I have rebuilt and refinished. This background experience, coupled with your manual, allowed me to design and build my own model of harp, the "Grand Imperial". Other models will follow for sure, based on your manual. What I really appreciated in your manual is your honesty, valuable information in easy to comprehend chapters, and your sense of humor. While you readily state that this is not a "woodworking" book, and assumes decent woodworking skills of the builder, it really helps someone with the skills and tools get up and running with their own design. You guide them safely away from many possible disasters, into the arena of success. I know that I have gone further using my background knowledge of pianos than your manual intended, (with an extended range of C1 to C7 on my latest harp), but I also know that I would not have even started without your manual. So I am indebted to you for this valuable resource. The excel spreadsheet is also a very necessary tool to use together with your manual, and is strongly recommended for a good (and safe!!!) scale design. Many mistakes can be avoided with these two invaluable tools of harp design and construction. Many, many thanks for your wonderful contribution to the world of Folk Harps.

I was surprised at the overall fit and quality of the completed project. I have made a few cigar box guitars in the past, but this was my first kit instrument. The instructions were clear and very easy to follow. It probably took me about 8 to 12 hours in total including wood finish and final adjustments. The neck and fret board needed a good deal of finishing, but final assembly came together really nicely. I was especially pleased by the amount of adjustments available. The neck angle, truss rod, and drum tension can all be tweaked after the final build and really help to dial in the perfect sting high, intonation and action. The kit I received had different hardware than pictured and was missing a few washers. When I contacted Music Makers, they responded immediately and sent out replacement parts straight away. I also replaced the nylon strings and wooden nut with light gauge bronze and a zero fret, which I think improves the playability. The smaller drum head does not resonate as much as my Gold Tone banjo, but the sound is quite nice and the lower volume makes it great for practicing at home without disturbing my wife or neighbors. Overall, I would definitely recommend this kit, and plan on making some of the other instruments available considering how well this one turned out.

I just received my Reverie a few days ago and have been in a reverie ever since! I teach therapeutic Tai Chi, and it is an awesome accompaniment to meditation. I just finished a class with kids who have special needs, aged 5-8. They don't settle down too easily and today when I played the harp they laid down and relaxed. Of course everyone had to play it after! Amazing instrument whether used for enjoyment or therapy. Beautiful, compact and easy to play. I don't have a musical bone in my body! But the sounds that come from the Reverie Harp are soothing and lovely. Thanks for this awesome instrument!

I would like to let your customers know how satisfied I am with Musicmaker's Kits and especially the Baritone Ukulele that I recently finished. It sounds terrific. I am so glad I purchased the Baritone Ukulele kit from you. I have been interested in building an instrument for sometime and luckily came across your web page. I really liked the design of the Baritone Ukulele and have a good friend who plays the instrument. I was unsure if I would be able to build it, as I do not consider myself a woodworker. I decided to call and get some information and was lucky to speak with Matt. I appreciated our conversation and felt comfortable that I would be able to complete the instrument. I also was reassured that if I had problems I had access to you and other employees of Musicmakers who would help. I really liked the idea that if I got stuck I could send the instrument to you and for a fee have it finished by Musicmaker. Well the good news is I was able to complete the instrument without any help. The instructions are without a doubt the easiest instructions I have ever used. The Baritone Ukulele is listed as taking 40 hours and four hammers. So not necessarily your easiest instrument kit to build. It took just about 40 hours with sanding and finishing. But the reality was the instrument was easy to build due the instructions being so easy to follow. The pictures were outstanding too. I am now learning to play. I love the sound. While I play the flute and hammered dulcimer, I have never played a guitar or similar type of instrument. I have five cords down and the melody of another. So someone wanting to build and learn to play an instrument I would highly recommend the Baritone Ukulele. I had so much fun building this instrument that I plan on building another from Musicmakers. My wife wants me to build a Hurdy Gurdy. Before building the Baritone Ukulele I would never have considered an instrument rated with five hammers. Honestly that does not even faze me now as I know your instructions are excellent. I am leaning towards the banjo so we will see who wins out. Oh and by the way I built the Ukulele on my kitchen table. You don't need a lot of woodworking tools. Thank you for making the experience so fun.

The Dakota baritone uke kit arrived very promptly in New Zealand, and I was really pleased by the packaging and care taken in parts protection. Everything needed was included, even drill bits!! I am a woodworker, so was appreciative of thoroughness and professionalism of all parts and instructions included. The instruction booklet was very clear, logical and easily understood; I am sure that a novice instrument maker would have little difficulty following it. Even things like the direction to rout were explained... You seem like a great company, easy to deal with and with a family feel. All too often I find that businesses don't want to know if there is a problem; you seem to care. I think being around musical instruments and "folk" type music indicates a certain kind of mindset, and this comes across in your business dealings.

It just fills the room with such gorgeous, mellow tone! You are wonderful craftspeople and I wanted you to know that you'll be bringing me and my family so many years of enjoyment. My husband, Fritz built this harp for me. He had previously build two of your harps, the Limerick and the Regency from your blueprints. When I first told him about the Voyageur and that is was only available in "kit" form he was not totally enthusiastic about building it. Perhaps, it was not enough of a challenge for his craftsman's nature. But I have to tell you that now he is very impressed with your product and brags about it to friends. The hardest part was painting my harp because I dearly wanted a purple harp. We actually ended up having friends of ours paint it at their auto body shop! I was lucky enough to find a local artist who was willing to do the design on the soundboard. Now that it is finished the harp is gorgeous and the sound is enchanting. Thank you so much for all your help.

Thank you so much for producing such a quality instrument in a kit! My harp kit became a family project: husband, Gary was the assembler, son-in law, Rusty, the sander, daughter, Tracy, was quality control... She made her Dad follow the instructions to the tee! I watched my harp quickly take shape and after it was all together it was wonderful to begin to put the strings each on and tune it up for a first hearing. Not only is the Voyager beautiful to look at but beautiful to hear. Thanks you for making the kit with easy to follow instructions and so affordable. I play professionally for weddings, dinner parties, funeral grieving services around Christmas time, and for many church events in my area. I got my start about 12 years ago when I purchased the cherry Limerick lap harp with wire strings from Musicmakers as my first harp. I still play it often, but now really enjoy the deep, rich tones of the Voyager harp. People always comment on how beautiful the music of the harp is and they are truly blessed by it's sounds. After I tell them I bought it from a kit and my family built it ..they are more amazed! I am a 54 wife and mother and a music student at Henderson State University. After graduation in December 2008, I plan on teaching voice and harp in my home studio. I don't have to even think of where I will buy my studio harp instruments or kits: it's going to be from Musicmakers!

I ordered a Voyageur harp a little while ago and finally had a chance to start it this last week. I have 35 years of woodworking experience. I've built furniture, sea kayaks, cabinets, woodturnings. You name it. I've sold a lot of custom furniture. None has ever been from a kit. Kits are for wimps. (I'm eating my words as I write this) Your work is better than mine. Your tolerances are tighter. Your roughwork is cleaner, better measured and more predictably square than almost anything I've built. I pride myself on my exactness. I think you just might have beat me there too. So far the only adjustments I've had to make is some edge planeing on the soundboard to fit it. The soundboard was a bit large. Perhaps a 1\16th over. Anyone could have used a belt sander or even hand sanded it down. I've got the sound box together and most of the sanding done. I am chomping at the bit to get it strung and get to playing!

My husband finished the harp, we've strung it and it looks gorgeous! The grain and color on the cherry wood is beautiful! I've played guitar most of my life, mainly classical, so I'm quite familiar with nylon strings. Stringing it wasn't all that difficult although it took the better part of 3 hours to get it done and I only snapped one string in the process due to my stupidity. It's starting to hold a tune and I'm looking forward to begin playing.

I couldn't be more pleased or grateful for your steadfast assistance from start to finish! My Voyageur harp is simply lovely; its sound is outstanding! My harp teacher was amazed with its sound. Love my nylon-string Lynda Lyre
Jill Geary
06/19/2018

I received my Lynda Lyre a few months ago. I chose nylon strings as I want the harp-like sound. This is my first instrument from Musicmakers - I assumed it would be well-made, but the moment I took it out of the box I was overwhelmed with the beauty and quality of craftsmanship! The pictures on the website do not do it justice! It is truly lovely! The tone is equal to or better than any of the small, therapy harps. And the resonance is outstanding! It sings and sustains for miles! The light-weight and portability are also a key factor. Although I will not likely play it horizontally, I like the flexibility knowing that I can lay it across someone's lap and let them play (or I can play for them) if needed. I also purchased the large, heart-shaped felt picks to facilitate ease of playing for use in the nursing home where others can just strum along with it and make sweet sounds without hurting their tender fingertip skin. The instrument is still very new to me - I'm mostly working on sweet, mellow, improv types of music; mellow tones and calming rhythms, although you can certainly play any music on the 3 octaves. The biggest challenge I've had is deciding how I want to hold it to balance it well. The included strap is important, and I've found that if I wrap the strap more "around my mid/low back" vs. up and over the left shoulder it seems more stable and comfortable for me. I am throughly enjoying the Lynda Lyre - highly recommend it!

After watching my brother learn and play harp for a couple of years I got jealous and decided that I needed a harp too. I hemmed and hawed over the music makers kits for a few months and then sprang for the Jollie kit. Came in a reasonable amount of time and the instructions and resources were completely adequate. I do agree that just about anyone with some patience can put this kit together with a few tools and a small space to work. The parts fit quite well and needed minimal modification. I had one or two questions during the process that were answered over the phone by the owner himself. I ended up having to by a new low C string as I cut it kind of close and then it started to unravel as I tightened it. If you have some patience and are dedicated to seeing the project through I believe you will end up with a very nice harp. After I finished it, my brother came over to check it out. He loved the tone and the way it played. Within minutes he was asking how much the kit was and where I had purchased it. This really is a gem of a company. Can't wait to buy and build future kits.

The packaging is great, very thoughtfully put together. I will need some equipment before I am able to assemble the kit and will give more detailed feedback once the project is complete. The hardwood sides are cut cleanly on the outside, some unevenness inside, which will not show. When placing the sides together, they do not line up 100%, so they will require some sanding. The hole for the rosette is cut well, just needs finishing. Both the top and especially the bottom boards will need quite a bit of trimming, as the sides are very generously cut. The grain is beautiful and will be enhanced by a finish. The holes for the strings are beautifully drilled. Depending on how everything comes together, the rating may come up to 5 stars.

The kit isn't difficult to assemble--maybe a bit tedious at times (shaping the soundboard and the back, for instance), put pretty straight-forward. I saw it as a fairly-affordable way to have a small, light-weight instrument to play while kicking back on the couch, but I am amazed by the big sound of this thing! This is a beautiful-sounding instrument, despite it's diminutive size. When I'm not playing it, I find myself talking about it, and I think my wife is getting jealous! :O Hats off to Music Makers!--not for making my wife jealous, but for making a great instrument!!!

I really enjoyed building my hourglass dulcimer kit! I am really pleased with the quality of the kit. I had never used a router before, but with the bit kit that I purchased with the kit, I had no problem at all- really good instructions on that part.

By following the centerline method on all parts, I was able to assemble everything with good alignment. I found it easier to rough cut the bottom and top before the glue up and then just rout it to shape. I was even able to get the rosettes aligned and install the banding front and back. That part was little scary, but the router did the cut perfectly and it turned out great!! Used a wipe on satin finish and paste waxed it.

Have had great comments from my friends and one of them is ordering the kit for her husband for Christmas!

The new Kantele is lovely. Just what I'd hoped it would be - beautiful piece of mahogany and very pretty tone. Tried it in a little recording with 12 string (slide) and some synth (a string quartet!). Rather a doleful piece but I like the timbre of the kantele with the 12 string.

Hi, Matt!

I've watched your Kantele video so often, I feel I almost know you personally. Anyway, I received my Kantele last week, May 4, and it arrived in perfect condition. In unpacking it, I was at once impressed by the visual beauty of the instrument. With its' long, graceful line and gentle angle, it looks like a piece of modern sculpture, but still has an air of centuries about it. The mahogany and walnut woods are beautiful, and the snowflake rosette is just the perfect touch. All in all, my Kantele speaks quality and expert craftsmanship, and I am completely pleased and satisfied.

So, Matt, I would like to thank you and all the guys at MM for your kindness and good service.

It's been a pleasure dealing with your company.

Last month I did purchase your Kantele kit and that went together very nicely. I'm 100% Finnish and I've been trying to plunk out old Finnish folk songs my mother used to sing. It sounds beautiful. I plan to build a few of these for Christmas gifts this year and order all my supplies from you. Everybody in my family has a masters degree in music except me. These musical gifts have really been a hit. I built cajons for them three years ago.

We've watched your little video of you demonstrating how to play the Kantele many times. My wife is trying to teach me how to play that little song that you do. (I'm a much better woodworker than a musician!)

Thanks for the great service.

Just wanted to let you know I finished my Kantele Kit assembly this past Sunday and am very happy with the way it turned out. We had 2 warm, sunny days in a row and I was able to get outside and work on instruments. I had the Kantele inside with finish drying on it and I was outside cutting out parts for your Teardrop Mandolin. I am really excited about the Mandolin. I decided I needed something to really challenge me and the mandolin is doing that. The plans are well drawn and easy to understand. I received a fret board from you and got some wood in today for the ft & bk. Spruce and cedar. I laid out and cut out the neck from Maple and was amazed at how well it turned out. i have some salvaged mahogany I am using for the sides. So far everything is turning out very well and I am really enjoying myself. I am very grateful for Musicmaker's helping me to find a new hobby.

I love the kantele. It's Finnished (sorry), and It's such a beautiful instrument. I love the woods you chose for it. It looks so nice with a simple polyurethane Finnish (sorry! I can't help the puns). This was such a fun kit to build. I'd recommend this one for a new builder any day. It not only looks beautiful when finnished (ahem....), but the sound of a kantele is so haunting. It puzzles me, too, because the soundboard is relatively thick, and it has no backboard, and yet it has this lovely timber. I just added one small piece of oak from a very ancient tree, as a decoration. It really needs nothing more than the rosette. I love that touch, too. I'm quite happy with this instrument.

It's like all of your kits that I've built. (The Strumbly was my first, and I still love it). I also appreciate the books you offer for playing these unusual instruments. I try to purchase a book when I make one of your unusual instruments! I make it a point to play them all and learn to play a few tunes on them. It's fun, and my family gets a kick out of it. With the kantele, my brother said, "Should I ask you what THAT one is?" Then I can tell the story from the Kalevala, about the origin of the kantele. Here's a few pictures. It's very nice, like all of your kits I've made so far. Thanks again. I love your products, not to mention the always supurb customer service. I'm eyeballing that chord harp, too. That is very interesting. It sounds like an autoharp to me. Nice idea!

Dear Matt, It was pleasure corresponding with you. You were very helpful kind patient and generous and the Kantele is just beautiful both to look at and to play.

I have been looking for an instrument for quite a while and this one fit the bill perfectly. I was so drawn to the sound and then to the simplicity of plucking and strumming in my lap. Harps were too awkward for me with size and my deteriorating depth perception. Autoharps required learning and made too big a sound. This simple zither plays my favorite singing range and will support me in "Threshold Singers" - our local hospice bedside music ministry. Only 2 or 3 of us go to a bedside and only simple meditative melodies and harmonies are used. With practice I think I will be able to attend a bedside solo, supported by the Kantele. It is lovely and I look forward to engaging more with it.

Thank you again for making this beautiful instrument such a pleasure to buy and enjoy!

The hardware is very good including all that is necessary to make a 15 string instrument in the shape of an animal. The plans can be downloaded at no expense and provide the instructions on the use of the hardware. The animal shapes can be modified allowing for other animal shapes to be used and the hardware easily used. The zither pins are of excellent quality and the drill bit included in the kit provides the necessary accuracy in the proper hole size for the pins. The 'kit' also included music sheets of several easy songs and a blank sheet which could be cut and placed between the body and the strings to help learn how to play. I highly recommend the hardware.

Directions for assembly were easy to follow. I did a small change for my own preference, I cut a shallow groove for the frets and then used some round bamboo toothpicks that I have. I did not have to do any adjustments to the bridge or nut. I also covered the cardboard with wood grain vinyl type stick on paper to give the 'natural' look. It seems to sound nice. I will use it as a wall decor. The main reason I got this was to get some ideas on assy as I am planning to build a 4 or 6 string "Dojo". This is my idea of a Dobro and Banjo cross using a stainless steel pie pan as an resonator, and body shaped much like a banjo from oak cut from old shipping pallets. I play a little bit of guitar so that is the tuning I will likely use.

Many doors of healing opportunity are opening
Pamela - Almond, WI

I played the Reverie Harp at a gathering a couple of weeks ago, and people were mesmerized. One gal who plays a regular harp told me it sounds like I have been playing for years and years. I then took it to a friend of mine and played for her and her husband, the strumming and plucking and then the dulcimer hammers - they were awed. This is the most incredible instrument ever. When I was first told I would be playing a stringed instrument, I had a dream. In my dream, I found what now as I know it appears to be a dulcimer, but it was strummed and it was the most beautiful sound I had ever heard. I thought, God, is there really an instrument that sounds that beautiful? So I researched the internet and the very closest was a 36 string harp, but yet, it was still not the sound I had heard in my dream. So I typed in harp kits one day and came to the Musicmaker's website. I saw this Reverie Harp and listened to the sound bites. It was the exact sound I had heard in my dream. I teetered to pay bills or to get the harp when a voice came very loud and clear into my head "JUST GET IT!"...At which point I then ordered the Harp. It is the most amazing sounding instrument anyone could ever play. No special musical talent is needed, just a desire to play. Thank you for creating this most wonderful instrument. I know many doors of healing opportunity are opening to play for people who need to be touched.

My husband and our other two children arrived on Friday, and Mom died on Saturday, Dec. 22. We all were with her in the room, and feel blessed that we had the honor to be with her. It was life-changing or my children (ages 23, 21, 18) Just two weeks before she died, I became aware of a very small harp-like instrument that was made by Musicmakers in Stillwater, MN. It is called the Reverie Harp. I had it shipped to Mesa, on the Wednesday before she died, and she was able to strum it on her lap, for a couple of days, until she became too weak to do so. Music was very important in her life, and she was so proud that I had taken up the harp...and was studying therapeutic music. Those of us in her hospital room would strum the little harp and just make pleasant sounds in the midst of a hospital setting. The harp was on her lap when she died, and we all felt comforted by its lovely sounds.

Irma played and we were in awe
Lucille – Rock Island, IL
03/06/2018
Background on Irma: Irma is in a nursing home.. She is in her 80's and is completely bed ridden. She has no hips and is in extreme pain with any movement. She can't change position without help - lies on her back in bed 24/7. She wishes she could die. Her 92 year old husband visits daily. Her hands are by her sides. I've never seen her hold a book/paper, so she can't read. Her only activity is watching TV. She told me after strumming the harp after I placed it on her chest, "If I had one of these, I'd never watch TV again." She was able to strum the harp with her fingers with very little arm movement. Then visited Irma again. When I walked in her door, she said "Did you bring it again???!!!" She didn't think she could play it (had forgotten she did it on Monday) but when she started strumming it with wide grin that never left, she asked me to go find some nurses and aides who would come and hear her play. When I said that Irma was playing my harp and "wants some of you to come and hear her play", this nurse looked at me like I was reporting a miracle since Irma doesn't use her hands/arms. She walked down the hall with me, 2 aides followed to see this miracle, too. They all stood around her bed as Irma played and were in awe.

"the song is about water"
Barb, Vashon Island, WA
03/06/2018
Today I introduced the Reverie Harp to a hospice patient. This 91-year-old hospice patient has thoroughly enjoyed music therapy sessions. Today he had the opportunity to actually play the harp himself. I placed the Reverie Harp across his chest as he sat up in his hospital bed. At first he slowly and deliberately plucked the strings, mostly low notes. Then he strummed to create soothing chords. He continued to intently focus on the instrument, moving his stiff hands gently across the strings. When he finally stopped, he said through misted eyes, "the song is about water. The water was so beautiful there in Pearl Harbor. I had to keep my head above water. I lost so many friends that day. The water was so beautiful and this song is about that water.

Rewarded with a huge smile from Granny!
Fred -- Conley, GA
03/06/2018
I took my harp to the nursing home where Granny was confined for three months as she recovered from a broken leg with multiple fracture. There was an 86 year old lady there who couldn't see, hear or speak. I placed my harp on the table in front of her where she was waiting for her food to be served. I placed her hand on the strings of the harp and allowed her to become familiar with it. There was little expression on her face. I then put the pick in her hand and helped her strum the strings. Still little expression on her face. I then took the harp and placed it against her chest, face, jaw bone and ear. I strumed the strings and was rewarded with a huge smile! I then placed the pick in her hand and helped her to strum the strings. She began to smile so very big and to utter something like AAAwwwww. As she kept on strumming the strings, she began to look around to try to find me, all the time smiling so big and saying AaWW, Aweee. No one will ever know for sure, but might this have been the first time she had expirenced Music as we know it????? The expirence was awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!

Noise and busyness falls away
Elizabeth Hazen, Vermont
03/06/2018
I wanted to tell you how my friendship with the Reverie Harp is growing. I haven't yet taken her to the hospital where I play because I want to know her better, but I have played her for individuals in my home and theirs, and the amazement has been universal. Most of all, on the evenings when I have played my large harp at the hospital for several hours, I curl up in a comfortable chair and play the Reverie for myself. All the hospital noise and busyness falls away, and I can return to the still place where I need to go frequently if I am to have music worth giving anyone. For the most gentle tone, I use the original Reverie tuning. I have tried soft rubber "picks", and the rubber finger protectors I get from a sewing supply house, but my favorite sound comes from plain fingers on the strings. The best relaxation comes from a balance of note groups and pauses for the harp's full resonance. Improvised and discovered tunes with slow arpeggios across the strings are deeply soothing. Although the Reverie Harp can be played by people of all ages and musical backgrounds, it is no toy instrument or substitute for "real music." Each time I play her, the sound both soothes and amazes me, as if someone else were playing for my relaxation. My fingers find new melodies and harmonies whenever they touch the strings. This is a wonderful new version of the ancient psaltery, deep and harmonious. Thank you and all who worked on her development.

The time I shared with my son .....was a gift!!!!
Cyndy Moore
03/06/2018
I wanted to tell you that the harp arrived safely at my home. It arrived last Friday morning. I want to tell you a story that I think will touch your heart. It is about healing, music and connection. I heard the doorbell ring when I was still in bed. I had the flu a few days last week and wasn't feeling well so I had slept in a bit. When I did get up, I found the box from you at the door. I brought it inside and told myself I would open it later so I sat it by my desk in my den. I was busy doing routine things around my home and waiting for my son to come for a visit. He is a 20 year old college student at UW River Falls and a most amazing young man. He was diagnosed with Asbergers Syndrome/PDD and Tourette Syndrome when he was 4. We worked very hard with our local school system and he had a "pushy" mother who never took "I can't" for an answer. He does extremely well, but still has issues that face every person who suffers from this type of disorder. I told you this for a reason and this is what makes the day the harp came even more special. I was resting in my recliner when he came and he spotted the box. He asked what was in it and I explained the story to him. He asked if he could open it and I told him he could. I moved to the carpet and we sat together and opened the box. Both of us gasped when we saw the harp! At the same time we said "Isnt that beautiful"......."look at the tree in the middle, wonder if it is a tree of life". Then he strummed the strings and we both melted. What a beautiful sound!!! We sat on the floor for 1 hour. He just kept saying how soothing the sound was and how he thought it was a really neat thing. We talked about the sounds and the vibrations. It was wonderful to see him interact with the sounds of each string and then the sounds of each strumming of the strings. Then I took it and we sat a bit longer as I enjoyed making my special sounds on it. He asked if I knew how to play it beyond just making the soothing sounds and told me he would like to learn to play it. SO..........this harp you sent for me to try has already done 2 things. It made a special young man sit by his mother and share some special time. It soothed both of us that day and I have enjoyed it each day after. Sometimes I just sit and pluck each string and love the sound. It is a beautiful piece of equipment and that time I shared with my son.............the day the harp came.....was a gift!!!! I am moved by what happened from the time we opened the box. Some things are meant to be. Your idea for music therapy is a winner!!!

Skeptics who said “I can’t” tried it and were amazed
Alice, Woodbury, MN
03/06/2018
What a great day! Matt Edwards loaned me a Reverie Harp and I shared it at two Presbyterian Homes. Introduced it to residents in Hospice Care, Memory Care and Assisted Living. The beauty of the Reverie Harp is that you don't need to practice to make beautiful sounds. Anyone can do it, even me. Without fail, everyone (staff and residents alike) who heard and/or played it smiled. Even the skeptics who said: “I can’t”, tried it and were amazed and delighted. Residents who routinely show little response to stimuli, perked up, opened their eyes and smiled. What a joy to behold! One terminally ill lady literally lit up with happiness as she played it! She enjoyed the music thoroughly – a real bright spot in her day. A man and wife I especially enjoy sat down and played it together. They are so in love and such gentle people; the joy they both showed on their faces made the whole day worthwhile. I'm very excited about the Reverie Harp. The harp satisfies my need to “make music” and is an excellent fit for what I want to accomplish as a volunteer. What a treasure and a gift! Thank you to Peter for the concept, and to Jerry and Matt for the fruition of a wonderful idea.

Her pain had diminished
Colleen Peoria, AZ
03/06/2018
I was asked to play for a woman that had just returned home from a shoulder surgery. When I arrived, she was in pain. Her arm was cold and her hand was clenched. I asked if I could place the Reverie on her chest and shoulder area so that she could feel the vibrations as I played it for her. (She was a friend of mine and so I could ask this of her.) As I played, she closed her eyes and after a while her hand relaxed and opened and the color returned to it. When I finished after about 30 minutes, she said her pain had diminished and her whole arm felt warm and better. She exclaimed..."better than pain pills!"

Normally non-responsive patients smile, laugh, look around, and reach.
Dick Powell, OH
03/06/2018
Just wanted to give you an update on the harp. I started my internship early in January. It's been 12-14 hour days, with no days off thus far. The Reverie harp has been with me every Wednesday and Thursday at Scottsdale-Osborn Skilled Nursing and Long-term care and Rehabilitation Center. It has also accompanied me to the Hospice and Memory Care units at Legacy Retirement Residence in Mesa. Without a doubt, the harp has been the single most effective means of eliciting a response from the low functioning clients at Scottsdale Osborn. The nursing and activities' staff have been amazed at seeing patients who have for the most part been in a vegetative state, smile, laugh, look around, and reach when the harp is placed on their bodies. Likewise for those who are higher-functioning with sensory needs, and for a multitude of others who find much joy and feel successful when playing it. My supervisor made the comment that the reverie will most likely be the most valuable instrument for my future work in music therapy. She has just been appointed head of the creative arts unit of a new hospital in Tempe. You may be hearing from her once she gets established. Karen, Gilbert, AZ I volunteer one day a week at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, OH playing my Musicmakers Studio Harp for patients and visitors. The Reverie is offered to patients (and explained to visitors) and reactions are truly amazing. I get a lot of "No, I don't know how" but tell them, if you can move your thumb you know all you need. Next I get, "That's so soothing, relaxing, the vibrations become a part of me, etc" They love it and become much less tense and grim than when I first started talking to them. It's hands on and makes them feel a part of a beautiful sound. Smiles and thanks are good for me as well.

I built my Old World Lyre after building a Jolie harp (my first ever woodworking project!) The Old World Lyre was somewhat simpler but still very satisfying. Even more satisfying is the ease with which the lyre can be picked up and spending a few minutes playing can really calm down a hectic day. I highly recommend the Old World Lyre as a project and an instrument!

As a beginner I love this instrument. So beautifully built. The tone with the wire-strings is full, clear and warm. Taking the lyre harp with me for a walk, sitting under a tree and play music is no big deal because the instrument is so handy. Just love it. The space between the strings is a bit tight for my fingers but i'll manage this. So ...beautyfull instrument to have a lot of joy.

Hammered Dulcimer Plan

Being the impatient type, I ordered the 17/16 Hammered Dulcimer Plan as a PDF download. Overall, I am very satisfied with the level of detail and precision of the plans. I have a really good printer (which is needed) which made this format acceptable for me. You will also have to tile the different printed pages together, but that is not too difficult. An alternative would be to take the file to a big-box office supply/printing store and get the plans printed out on one sheet. I'm in the process of construction now, but overall, the plans are doing what they set out to do.

A merry heart doeth good like a medicine
Leslie McConnell RN
03/04/2018
To My Friends at Musicmakers, First, thanks to whomever chose my Reverie for me. Well done. I am a lever harp player and a nurse. I have worked as an RN in hospice and have volunteered the harp music for hospice patients and nursing homes quite a bit. I usually tune my harp pentatonically and encourage people to play it. I am limited when it comes to people in bed. NOT anymore! I want to share a great story with you. My current job is in an inpatient rehabilitation unit. The patients there range from orthopedic to trauma to brain injuries and strokes. They have three hours of therapy a day and are very tired at day end. I had taken my Celtic harp on a Friday night and played them some lullabies to drift off to sleep and they seemed to have really liked it. I told them I had ordered the Reverie and tried to explain it to them. When it came, my husband brought it unopened to me at work. We gathered up a group of three patients that were especially interested. I opened it in front of them and reminded them that we were all equal because I had never played one or even seen one in person either! (Thanks to whomever tunes all of these before they go out!) I asked who wanted the first turn and a man, 68 years old who had a severe stroke wanted to go first. His left side was flaccid. I helped him rest it against himself and used his limp left hand to brace the bottom of it. He raised his right hand and began to excitedly strum it like a banjo and sang … “Who let the dogs out … Whoo Whoo Whoo … Who let the dogs out …Whoo Whoo Whoo” At the top of his lungs!! Never in a million years would I have guessed that would happen! The other two patients, women and the physical and occupational therapist and myself were totally helpless laughing and singing along! It was a wonderful, spontaneous moment. “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine.” We all got a good dose. Thank you all very much. I am and will be forever grateful for such a bridge to people. A healing tool.

Calming and centering for patients
Judy Young, Allina Hospice, St. Paul, MN
03/04/2018
We were able to purchase a used reverie harp last year for our music therapists in Allina Hospice. They (4) are thrilled with it for many reasons: calming and centering for patients, resonant and tactfully stimulating to dementia patients, a gentle way to awaken people they come to visit in the nursing home, a stategy for breathing entrainment when people are struggling for breath, a soothing instrument which family can play as they sit vigil. For all of these reasons we hope to have more harps! We would like to buy 3!

Faces light up with delight!
Rebekah Shardy, Manager of Volunteers
03/04/2018
Dear Matt, Here are a couple stories: A severely disabled woman with dementia and Parkinson's showed immediate interest in the harp after I strummed it a few times for her. Despite her tremor, she steadied her hand enough to play it. Her face lit up with delight as she realized she was making the harmonious sounds! There was a spoon on her table, and I handed it to her. This really excited her. I stood by while she experimented with the sound for another five minutes. It made her day, a happy surprise and experience that gave her the feeling of making things happen in her world of physical limitation. Next story, a middle-aged man dying of MS had been a rock guitarist and enjoyed the beauty of the instrument. Like many of the dying, he had begun to see visions of another world within this one. Looking at the lovely carving of the tree at the center hole of the harp, he murmured, Very pretty. I can see the tree, and the deer with antlers behind it, and the doe… Thank you for this beautiful expression of life's loveliness for the disabled, elderly and dying to enjoy! You have been inspired by the angels. Blessings.

Our Hospice purchased a Harp recently. We have been taking it on Hospice volunteer visits and have an amazing video of a one of our Hospice patients playing the harp and singing with it. This gentleman is in a Nursing Home and the staff at the home report a marked positive change in him since. Just wanted you to know how this touched him in particular, but in taking the harp on visits we have found that many of our dementia patients seem very engaged in making music. We are so glad that we were able to purchase the reverie harp. Thank you!

Focusing my mind for Bible meditations
Kim
03/03/2018
Hi Matt, I wanted to tell you how much I am enjoying my Reverie Harp. I was looking for an instrument that plays beautiful sound - not necessarily music. I use this for relaxation and for focusing my mind for Bible meditations. Other instruments require that you look at them, or at least think about what you are doing. I just wanted the heavenly sound and the feel of the vibrations as I hold the harp and strum or pluck the strings. The Reverie Harp is perfect! Thanks for such a beautiful instrument!

An immediate surge of joy
Claudine
03/03/2018
With your gift of the Reverie Harp, a new light has been added to my life. Three years ago, during my last MS exacerbation, I lost much more than my ability to play the violin. Those first 12 months were my darkest days. Between not being able to play the violin and an MS-forced retirement after more than 30 years of teaching music to children in the classroom, I was becoming very depressed. At the end of my first year of recovery I began playing violin again with my youngest private students. I couldn't play very well but I felt safe with them; they appreciated anything I did - they were too inexperienced to notice my weak technique and this gave me confidence to try to play again. During the second year of recovery I was asked to play for 2 funerals and a wedding. All these events were for very special relatives so I wouldn't say no. These events pushed me into working harder and, after a lot of practice and perseverance, I was able to play for these large family events. At the beginning of my 3rd year of recovery (August 2008) during our trip to visit you and Marilyn and the boys, I was immediately drawn to the reverie harp. When I heard the instrument that you made for Marilyn I knew that the reverie harp was in some way what I needed. I can only imagine the amount of intense focus and concentration you must have placed on building that Reverie harp to have it ready in time for Marilyn and the boys to present to me on Thanksgiving Day. Your gift of this harp has gone far beyond being a gift to me. This beautiful instrument has become a new "healing vibration" in my life. Not just for me but also for many, many of my friends and family. I have been able to learn a new way of reaching out and communicating with people. Communicating with words has never been a strength for me. I have always communicated best, from my heart, through music (voice and violin). When I lost my ability to play violin I felt very lost and alone. When I was handed the harp on Thanksgiving Day I felt an immediate surge of joy I hadn't felt in a very long time. Indeed, it has proven to be just what would bring me to the next level of my recovery. I have been playing the reverie harp at least once a week since January during meditation class. Without exception, everyone in the class has expressed appreciation for the deep state of grace that the sound from this instrument brings to them in their meditation. Another way I have been blessed by the harp has been during my visits to a local hospital - a long-term-care facility near our home here on the coast side. One of the ideas I have been thinking about for the last couple of years has been to visit patients in this hospital. Recently, I had the opportunity to do just that: the reverie harp proved to be a wonderful form of "non-verbal" communication when I played. It has proven to be especially significant for those patients who are unable to speak. It has been such a gift to me to feel joy when I look in their eyes while I play for them. I could go on, but suffice it to say that your gift has changed my life in ways I cannot express adequately in words. Indeed, you have helped this third year of recovery to be one full of grace. Words cannot express my appreciation for your wonderful gift. You are a kind and generous soul. Thank you and Love always.

Dear Musicmakers, Our volunteers are absolutely thrilled at how it has helped them connect with our patients. The first time the harp was taken out to a patient with dementia, the volunteer came back literally glowing. It was thte first time that the patient actually opened her eyes and smiled during the visit from the volunteer. Tha6t patient is pictured in the article. The volunteer loved it so much she went to your shop and bought her own harp and has been using it for her own helaht and well being, as well as with our patients. Our patients are responding even better than we had hoped. There is nothing more wonderful than seeing a big smile on their faces when we visit with the harp. Thank you so much for this beautiful opportunity to connect with our terminally ill patients. I hope you will find our article encouraging. We appreciate you!

I want you to know how thrilled I am with my Reverie Harp! I do not play a musical instrument, and I cannot read music, but my Reverie Harp sounds beautiful no matter how I play it. I have already spent hours using your music sheets and "composing" my own songs. I have just begun a ministry in my church taking communion to nursing home residents and shut-ins, and I am going to play my Reverie Harp when I visit! The instrument has a beautiful, full sound, is made of high-quality materials, and is skillfully crafted. I have had no trouble tuning it. Finally, I love holding and playing my Reverie Harp---it is a very calming and peaceful experience. Guess what is on my Christmas list? A Hognose Psaltery!

Hello, My name is Margaret Stephens and I am a contracted Therapeutic Harp Practitioner at the Norris Cotton Cancer Center in Lebanon, NH. My supervisor purchased a Reverie Harp in 2010 (?) and I use it frequently in my work with patients and families. A local TV station did a short piece on our Arts Program at the Cancer Center and I thought you would like to see me using the Reverie Harp. I offer to give people 'musical massages' and they just love the vibrations. There have also been several people who have purchased a Reverie from you because they experienced it and loved it (Karen Speerstra and James Lowry). It is a wonderful soothing tool to share with people.

I'm a cabinet maker with over 40 years experience. It's hard for me to buy a kit, since my 1st reaction is to just make it! The quality of the wood is outstanding, perfect grain and dead flat. what impressed me most is the machining! perfect corners that usually tend to chip, routs for strings and string holes I'm still trying to figure out how I'd do! They've done all the hard work, there would of been a lot of that, to make a kit that is going to be very easy for anyone to assemble! Clamp, glue & sand, that's it! Just received it, but can't wait to be playing it!!!

The materials and directions were good, except for one shortcoming. The notch in the peg head for the nut had not been cut at the factory. You need to make sure either it is cut, or change your directions so that the recipient knows to cut that notch (as I had to do). Very happy with finished product. Used the Deft lacquer and paste wax as recommended by you. Will be back for more kits in the future.
Thank you for the review. Sorry about the missing notch in the peghead. We had a batch of pegheads that were missing that notch. We've fixed that issue. We will always swap out parts at no charge if we made a mistake but it sounds like you had the resources to take care of this. Thanks for that.

I bought it for my 11 year old grandson. I determined it wouldn't last a week in his room. The idea of using tooth picks for frets is unreasonable with steel strings. I returned it!!
Sorry you didn't think it would work out. We have cardboard instruments here that are 7 years old. We've dropped them on the floor intentionally several times to demonstrate how durable they are. They still sound and play fine and the toothpick frets are holding up great.

I first learned about reverie harps from a music therapist who visited my mothers memory care facility. The sounds she made just by strumming or plucking the strings moved my soul and made me want one of my own. I ordered the Reverie 2 that day, and received it three days later. I could not be happier with it. Playing it is a perfect way to start and end my day, and I can now share it with my mom and some of the other residents. Thank you, Musicmakers, for this beautiful instrument and your excellent customer service.

Looks Very Impressive When Done
Don Werdin from Illinois
02/05/2018
Hello. I enjoyed assembling and finishing the reverie harp. This was my fourth or fifth kit from your company and I have never been disappointed. I do like the selection of the wood for this kit and must say that it looks very impressive now that it is done. I continue to play with it and like the sounds that it can produce. A person at the church that I go to was so enthralled with the harp that she wanted to know more about your company, so I gave her the catalog that you sent along with the kit. There is a chance that she will want me to assemble a harp for her. Thanks again, and I am fairly sure there is at least one if not two more kits for me to assemble in the future.

I broke the original string when installing it on my Voyageur Harp that I built from the Music Makers kit. I also ordered a C3 to be on the safe side, because I was afraid I had damaged that one. My order arrived sooner than I expected and the new D3 string went on smoothly. After gradually and carefully tuning it over a period of time, it is now holding pitch and plays beautifully!

Hey Matt!!! I finished my harp kit!!!! It turned out so well!!! THANK YOU FOR ALL THE HELP --- I really couldn't have done it without the excellent instructions and the EXCELLENT VIDEOS!!! The extent of my woodworking experience had been refinishing some furniture years ago and as far as my musical ability, I've never played or tuned an instrument in my life, but with your instructions, videos and patient, supportive emails I WAS SUCCESSFUL!!! It really is a beautiful, beautiful instrument -- to look at, to play and to listen to! The kit was challenging, but not overwhelming, especially when I could contact you with any questions. The sanding and watching the grain of the beautiful wood start to show and seeing the harp take shape was really a rewarding part of it. I only had a Black & Decker palm sander and no router so it took a while to get the curve of the edges just the way I wanted, but I took my time and I was quite pleased with the result. I loved the feel of the smooth cherry and mahogany and loved the smell of sawdust (which was pink!). I had my brother-in-law use his drill press to drill the holes. I thought the harp was pretty when I was all done sanding, but when that first coat of finish went on, it was just gorgeous, it really was a thrill to see how pretty an instrument it was. During the stringing of the harp, I literally had your video playing over and over and over as I was installing the strings. The first one was tough and took me a while, but each one got a little easier to do and I was a little less clumsy at it, and by the last one I was far from an expert at it, but it went pretty well. The tuning baffled me at first and I had to walk away from it for a day. I listened to your video over and over, I listened to the online tuner and it just wasn't clicking with me and my harp was just sounding reeeeeeally bad. I'm not sure what I was doing wrong, I would get the electronic tuner to play the right note on the template under the string, but I must have been skipping around octaves or something, but it was bad. When I tried again, I put it together in my mind (and it maybe would be obvious to somebody who reads music or is experienced playing an instrument or is just plain smarter than me) that the D5 on string 2 should sound exactly like the D5 on string 21, the C5 on 3 and C5 on 20 should sound the same, etc, and then it all came together and it was beautiful! My family and especially my Mom seemed pretty impressed that I built the harp. I gave it to the hospice in Litchfield in memory of my Dad and sister and hopefully it'll bring many hours of enjoyment and comfort to those that use it. I'm attaching an article the local paper wrote up on the gift. Thank you for the help Matt, everyone at Musicmakers was just so nice, it really was a fun, rewarding experience.

The Reverie Harp Kit went together with success, even for someone without a lot of woodworking skills or background. We are finding it very beautiful to look at and soothing to play. It will be used in a hospice situation and we're really looking forward to sharing it with the patients and staff. The Director suggested that it's first assignment could be in an empty patient room that seems to have a tendency to collect "bad vibes". Maybe we can change the feelings that seem to linger in the room to encourage more positive thoughts :-) Thanks so much for a great product and a wonderful opportunity to share something good with others during one of life's most difficult times.

Thank you. I purchased the Reverie Harp Kit and have just finished it a few days ago. It is hard to put down, as the sound is so soothing. It is also nice to have my young children be able to play it and make beautiful sounds without knowing anything about scales yet. As for building tips -- my router is still packed away from a recent move, so I used a hand-held mini planer for trimming the front and back. Much faster than sanding and worked perfectly. Will be back for more in the future! Thanks again

I love my Jolie Hybrid harp! I have gone through several harps from a variety of manufacturers looking for the perfect combination of sound, beauty and functionality. It's only 13 pounds! Perfect for my aging back, making it a snap to put in and take out of my car (which I do many times a day.) It has a big sound--surprising for a harp of this size! A rich, warm sweet voice with a nice long sustain. And I was so pleased to find how easy it was on my hands to play this harp! The aching in my fingers was threatening to stop my playing. What a relief to play this harp. The team at Music Makers--especially Jacob--went out of their way to customize my harp shape and to select the most gorgeous woods. They were endlessly patient with my myriad of questions. The lights are a must and so pretty. They create a lovely ambiance while illuminating my hands and music so I can play. The sound pick up works amazingly well--a clear, clean sound with lots of power. And even though I haul it around in my car all day, it stays in tune very well. I couldn't be happier. Thank you Music Makers for your dedication to bringing us the newest technology and preserving the classic beauty and rich sound of the harp!

I ran into some problems with the size of some of the pieces. The corner blocks were shorter than the ribs. So the inlay bandings covered it up. Also where the neck fits. The up and down length was about 3/16th to short. and the tail block was to short. Other wise it a very nice kit, and have it all together and putting finish on it now.

I managed to make the Jolie Harp without any kind of workshop (as I don't have one). I am thrilled. I really enjoyed the process of construction, and I came to discover that I really enjoyed hand sanding and feeling the finish of the wood with my fingers. I got to play it yesterday for the first time and am extremely pleased. The sound is bright and yet resonant. I made this harp, as my way of helping a woman, who wants to undertake music therapy, and this was the most cost-effective option that I could find. I think this harp is superb and will do the job beautifully. I may want to do this again sometime in the future.

Good quality parts. I've bought over 150 of these sets. Just a few things to look out for if you are really picky: The kit comes with 15 tines. I generally use 12 for a more ergonomic spacing. The ends of the tines are bent down some for more comfortable playing than straight tines, but they are still a little hard on your thumbs. I would like the ends to be bent a little more to give them a smoother feel. The brass parts tend to be longer than the wood bridge piece, but if you make the body wide enough, this doesn't matter. Finally, the wood bridge pieces are nicely machined and have a smooth finish. The ends are angled a bit and I don't know if this has a function or not (maybe so the tines can be splayed), but I always straighten them up on the disc sander so the ends are perpendicular to the sides. To me it just looks neater.

I bought the harp Wheels for my Dusty Strings FH36. It seemed to be a good idea and a much cheaper solution than buying the very expensive Harpo, even considering the high shipping costs to Germany. The first surprise was that I had to pay another 45 € for customs when the Wheels arrived. Okay, nothing can be done about that, but it would have been helpful to have the information about that before the order. I tried to fix the wheels to my Dusty Strings Bag and it did not really work with rubber straps as shown in the video. They are much too loose, so that the wheels fall off when lifting the harp up the stairs or into the car. I found a quite complicated technique to fix the wheels to to the harp bag, but then the next problem appeared: the Dusty Strings Bag dos not have a handle on the backside but only on the front side of the bag. So it is quite unsafe to roll the harp around because it can easily slip away and fall. So all in all I have spent too much money on a - for me- kind of useless tool. :o( The idea basically seems to be clever but it only works with the music makers bags or with a lot of (expensive) additional adjustments like shown in Susan's review. My final estimation is: not of good use or of good prize for the European customer.
Sorry to hear about this. There isn't much we can do about customs and we try to make it clear that overseas customers will be responsible for import duties taxes and customs. It can be a challenge to use our wheels with bags from other makers. Usually folks can get them to work well enough for standard use but getting the wheels to remain attached while lifting the harp or going up and down steps with the wheels is a challenge indeed.

I ordered the hognose psaltery kit to build with my son who is four-and-a-half. It arrived very quickly and everything was as expected. It went together very easily and we stained it a mustard yellow before protecting it with polyurethane. It looks and sounds great. Few tools were needed aside from a drill, a few clamps and a sander. We made a simple drill jig so the tuning pin holes would be all the same and used a fine flushcut saw to trim the box sides but you could do without those. Great kit to try out instrument building and gain some practical experience! We also have the mountain dulcimer kit to try next :)

Anyhoo I have always liked folk music and I am keen to play a few traditional songs for my own and hopefully my families enjoyment. I have been playing a gut-strung harp for nine years. I was always impressed with the warm sound, but it was a HEAVY instrument. I had also been researching a carbon fiber harp, but the price point was out of my range. Enter the Jolie Hybrid! I had the opportunity to play on my harp teacher's Jolie and loved the rich, yet bright sound. Shortly after, I learned that Musicmakers had a new hybrid model making the original so much lighter. This is truly a remarkable harp. The perfect string tension leads to an easy touch allowing for more speed, and accuracy with ornaments. Though it is extremely portable, the sound is not at all compromised. It is by far the most beautiful sounding harp I have tried. If you are at all on the fence about buying this model, fear not! You will be more than impressed. Buy this harp!

I really like the Felt Heart Pick which give my 🎼Reverie Harp 2🎼 a sultry/smokey sound. It would be great if the felt on the Felt Heart Picks came in more colors just like the pick in the center of the Felt Heart Pick.😊

I got the large size for my wife's Dusty Strings orphan FH-34 and asked for it to be unfinished. A D-S orphan harp is made from several different woods, hers has a bubinga base and front post. I stained and varnished it to match the bubinga. The base makes the harp even more stable. It is great.

So, I started out renting this harp on my summer visit to Minnesota, and it blew me away - I just had to buy it!! I love everything about it - the beautiful, resonant sound; the incredibly light weight - I had always dreamed of a harp I could carry around myself and not have to depend on my husband to help me!; the hand-friendly string tension; the Truitt levers and sleek design, with beautiful mahogany wood. Simply, I'm in love! Thanks, Musicmakers, for building such an awesome harp!!

The "Megahertz" produced by the Reverie Harp 2 is quit soothing to my Spirit that goes way back to Biblical times with King David who was a Exceptional Harpist! I am so happy to own the Reverie Harp 2 which will be well used for relaxation and physical healing.

I have had three purchases from this Company with no problems. I purchased wire strings for my harp and it was simple online plus the wire strings do sound brighter which I like. Just pay attention while restringing or those dam ends will poke you and you will wonder where the blood came from!

The nylon strings have a good sound and are very durable. With the few coloured ones this will be helpful on the fly. The extra maintenance supplies are a God send. Everything I have bought has worked well including the ordering and delivery. Thanks

I first saw a Reverie harp during the Virtual Harp Summit and thought "how nice", but had absolutely no plans to buy one. But, the idea kept niggling at me... then I started watching the YouTube videos and started thinking "I might need one of those..." Then I decided that I needed more peace and calm in my life and the idea of owning one became an itch and then a craving. I have both a pedal and a lever harp, but sometimes one just needs to sit back with a little harp on one's chest and pluck random strings and make "soul music" - music that promotes peace and calm. Super-fast shipping and, after stalking the harp via the delivery tracking info, I got it, pulled it out of the packaging and promptly lost a half hour in delightful "reverie". Aptly named! It is my daily meditation now...

A truly beautiful instrument in so many ways. Really like the shape, size, and sound. I am not a musician and neither are some of the people I work with so I was looking for a harp that is portable and playable by all. This definitely fits the bill! When held, the harp vibrates and resonates thru the body in a very healing and soothing way. It allows spontaneous compositions and exploration. And the gig bag makes it easy to take anywhere. Thank you for creating a harp that is truly accessible to all.

Wonderful Carry-Along with a Big Sound
Caroline Kasting
07/24/2017
I've been playing the harp for about 12 years. I started with a 29-string student model, then got a 22-string lap harp to travel with. What I discovered was that I was more inclined to play the smaller harp because it was more convenient than going to another room where there was room for my larger harp. I had been wanting a new harp, so after some reflection I decided that what I really wanted was a slightly bigger lap harp that would have a bigger, richer sound than my 22-string. I like to make things, so I bought the Limerick Lap Harp kit (in walnut) and put it together in my spare time over the course of a year. The body went together quickly and easily (in an afternoon). The instruction booklet was extremely detailed, and if I had a question, I would email Musicmakers and get a quick response. Nowadays, Musicmakers has posted how-to videos on how to assemble their instruments on their web site, too, so there are plenty of resources if you have trouble. They also have a wonderful return policy where they will finish the instrument for you if you get in completely over your head. What took the most time for me was achieving the perfect painting on the sound board and waiting for the strings to hold their pitch. Right away, the Limerick had a beautiful, rich tone, especially in the bass. Over the course of the last three years, as the wood and strings have settled and stretched, the sound has become warmer and bigger. I also recently installed a Dusty Harp Pickup so that I could be heard in a band setting, and it has done a wonderful job of amplifying the harp's authentic sound. I love this harp. And I love hearing someone else playing it because I can enjoy its sound more from across the room than I can when my attention is split between listening and playing. I did make a couple of minor changes: I put leather washers behind the string knots (instead of the plastic beads included in the kit) and added red and blue lever rings on the C and F levers. I also tuned it to the key of Eb to be able to play in the widest variety of common key signatures. I successfully play my Limerick with my church praise band. The harp fits easily in the trunk, back seat, or foot well behind the front seats of my car. I am a bit of a klutz, though, so I am constantly banging the wide end against stuff when I carry the gig bag over my shoulder.

For the most part the digital download is good except when it comes to condescending what the actual pdf manual says for types of wood used. Also very unsatisfied with lack of information given for the dimensions for the bottom and soundboard. Last but not least would be a good idea to let buyers of digital copies know that with the purchase of the mailed plans they receive templates I would have gone that way other than digital.
Yes, digital copies are hard to use. You can print them out full size on multiple sheets of standard letter size paper and tape the pieces together for making full-size templates. We have a link to printing instructions on our web site. Also, if you take the file to a copier service (such as Kinko's), they can make a full-size "working copy" for you on large paper. One copy is permissible with your digital purchase. Finally, if you pay for the postage, we would be happy to send you the printed version since you already paid for the digital version.

This is an excellent beginner book for being able to play hymns. My daughter played just the chords on a piano, my one son is learning the violin, my other son is learning the guitar, and my daughter is learning the guitar as well. And I sang :) We were able to play Amazing Grace within a half an hour! And I kept on playing just the background chords on the piano, singing along, and was able to learn 9 songs just today! Thanks so much, we are going to play a few songs at church in a couple weeks, even though we are beginners.

Reverie harp brings inspiration

My friend loaned me her Reverie about 2 months ago, and I just HAD to own one myself. I'm totally overwhelmed by how beautiful and melodious, not to mention easy to play, this instrument is. The workmanship is extremely high caliber, and the egg shape is perfect for hugging it to my torso to play it, I love the way it vibrates through my body. I primarily use it to help my husband who has a chronic illness, but it's also good just for me. The sound is soothing and inspirational. I keep it in pentatonic tuning, so I can play mindlessly and still have a wonderful experience. Thank you for your dedication to excellence and for your careful packaging and speedy shipping. I found my interactions with you smooth, responsive, and most helpful. Thanks!

I received my Reverie Harp and am so excited to share this wonderful gift with my clients and so many more. I have never played the harp, or even a string instrument for that matter, and this is such an easy wonderful way to convey sound. I practice Singing Bowl Sound Therapy in Cedar Rapids Iowa and have been adding this to work with clients and it has been a huge hit. I can't wait to see where this gift takes me!

Super SUPER great instructions. I was worried that them being all-plastic might deaden the sound, but it doesn't! The few dollars in price difference really adds up when I'm putting them on 29 strings. I've only got four at the moment, but I'm going to keep adding them to my Smartwood harp as I go. Installing them is precise, but it's not difficult, and the instructions are great. They also came with extra screws, which is really, really nice! Always impressed!

The wheels are so helpful in aiding mobility and they are easy on-easy off! One less thing to worry about when out and about. There was not much lag time for arrival, a definite plus. The other thing that I really liked was the easy to open, not-excessive packaging. All in all, another positive experience. Thank you!

Beautiful Relaxation Tool

I've received my Reverie Harp. What a beautiful relaxation tool to add to my business, Healing Sounds Harpistry! The simplicity and ease of playing evoke such gentle, beautiful sounds, taking one out of left brain thinking and judgment that is associated with musical performance and instead to a state of relaxation for not only anyone for which the Harp is being played, but for the player as well. The shape, weight and overall design of the Reverie Harp are such inviting features that call to people to come pick up the Reverie Harp and begin. The customer service from Matt at Musicmakers was fantastic; it was wonderful to feel the attention and dedication to this purchase as if I were the only Musicmakers' customer, which we know is not the case for this wonderful company. Thank you for the perfect transaction, fast shipping and beautiful creation.

Only 4 stars, because the edge for gluing the sides was *extremely* narrow/thin. Took about 4 hours to fully assembled. I painted mine with black chalkboard paint so I can decorate the top as I feel; the back was also chalkboard painted, but I just signed the whole back with a chalkboard marker, then coated it with spray on lacquer :) At some point, I'd like to buy a few more, and offer an after school/weekend workshop for disadvantage youths. Thanks, Musicmakers!!
