The holy grail of harp-making is to make a harp that weighs less than 15 pounds, produces a full, rich tone, and withstands the tension of all the strings. Until now, this seemed like an unachievable goal. In recent years we have seen the introduction of carbon fiber harps and have been very impressed! We are amazed at how light they can be and how much abuse they can withstand. But working with wood is where our heart is. The depth of beauty and the warm, inviting tone of wood harps are qualities we were not willing to give up. So we began to consider how we might combine the ultra light weight and durability of carbon fiber with the natural beauty and depth of tone you get with wood.
Enter the Jolie Hybrid - a carbon fiber and wood hybrid harp.
We start with beautiful ribbon mahogany for the back, sides, neck, and pillar. We remove 80% of the material and then reinforce each piece with carbon fiber. This significantly reduces the weight while, at the same time, making each piece stronger than it was to begin with. Our carbon fiber hybrid Jolie weighs in at 13 pounds. Wow! Thats about the weight of well fed house cat!
This is the harp that we have always wanted. It combines the best of both worlds. The Jolie Hybrid maintains the tone of our all-wood model at a fraction of the weight.
